Rachmaninoff - Vocalise No. 14 Op. 34
Sheet music for flute
Info: | Vocalise from Rachmaninov, op. 34/14 (1912), is popular vocal works without text. It has been arranged for orchestra, piano, various chamber ensembles, and solo string instruments. It is easily the most popular and recognizable of such works, perhaps matched only by the aria of Bacchianas Brasileiras No. 5 by Heitor Villa Lobos. The group Opus 34 contains some of Rachmaninov's most beloved songs, each adapted to the vocal personality of a particular singer he has known since the Bolshoi opera. Highly declamatory examples, such as In the Soul of Each of Us, op. 34/2, were dedicated to the great bass Feodor Chaliapin, whose ability to turn words into dramatic musical statements was legendary. Vocalise, on the other hand, was dedicated to Antonina Nezhdanova, who can be assumed to have a singularly pleasing and flexible voice, given the sustained, almost violin-like character of the piece. Although originally written for voice and piano, Vocalise is most often heard in its orchestrated version as a concert hall delicacy. In this setting, the rich, continuous nature of the strings complements the rising voice to great effect and makes the piece all the more sensual. |
