| Info: | "Come, come, Emmanuel" (Latin: "Veni, veni, Emmanuel") is a Christian hymn for Advent and Christmas. The words and the music of "O come, O come, Emmanuel" developed separately. The Latin text is first documented in Germany in 1710, whereas the tune most familiar in the English-speaking world has its origins in 15th-century France. John Mason Neale's 1861 translation of Hymns Ancient and Modern is by far the most prominent in the English-speaking world, but there are other English translations as well. Translations into other modern languages (particularly German) are also widely used. Although the text can be used with many metric hymn melodies, it was first combined with their most famous melody, often called Veni Emmanuel, in the English Hymnal Annotated in 1851. Later, the same melody was used with the versions of "O come, O come, Emmanuel" in other languages, including Latin. |
