Handel - Lascia ch’io pianga from Rinaldo

Sheet music for flute

Info: "Lascia ch'io pianga" is an aria from the Handel's opera Rinaldo and it has become a popular concert piece.. The original melody for the aria is first found in Act III of 1705 opera Almira, also by Handel, as a Sarabande. In 1711, Handel recycled the music yet again, this time for his 1711 London opera Rinaldo, using a new text. Rinaldo was a major triumph for Handel, and it is with this work that the aria is chiefly associated. Handel's 1739 pasticcio Giove in Argo also features a shorter and lesser known "Lascia la spina".

The artist: German, later British Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Born in a family indifferent to music, Handel received critical training in Halle, Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.
